Heavy rains coming - GMet issues warning as Ghana enters peak rainy season
Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) warned Ghanaians to prepare for heavier and more frequent rains in the coming weeks as the country enters the peak of the rainy season. Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting, said on Saturday, May 23, 2026, "This is just the beginning."
Joseph Tetteh Portuphy attributed the pattern partly to climate change, noting that Ghana experienced a weaker Harmattan season this year. He urged residents in flood-prone and low-lying communities to take precautionary measures early, including temporarily relocating during heavy downpours where necessary. He said, "Everybody knows where they are and when it rains you know how it looks, especially those of us in the lowlands. There are waterways we should make sure - if we cannot move out permanently, we should move out temporarily and return after the rains."
The warning comes after heavy rains swept through parts of Greater Accra on Friday, May 22, causing widespread flooding. Areas including Alajo, Mallam, Baah Yard, SCC, and Dansoman recorded varying levels of flooding, with several residents in Alajo forced out of their homes. Affected residents reported damage to household items, electrical appliances, and personal belongings.
