Death toll in Ofankor barrier crash hits 12, 22 remain hospitalised
The National Road Safety Authority confirmed the death of another victim from the multiple-vehicle crash at Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Nsawam Highway, increasing the number of dead to 12. Felix Owusu, a Senior Planning Manager at the NRSA, revealed this and stated that 22 other people are receiving treatment at various hospitals following the crash. Nineteen of the injured victims are at the Asofa Hospital, while three others are at the Achimota Hospital.
Seven vehicles were involved in the pile-up on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the highway around 4am on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The vehicles included two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, and a tricycle. Mr. Owusu said preliminary information suggests the tricycle may have triggered the chain of events, stating, "From the little we have gathered, there was a stationary tricycle, or what most people call an 'aboboyaa'. There was a tricycle which had broken down." A tipper truck carrying sand reportedly stopped behind it, followed by two Sprinter buses, before another tipper truck approached at high speed and crashed into the vehicles ahead. The NRSA is awaiting the police's full investigation to establish the exact circumstances.
