Police foil planned robbery on GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank at Labone; 2 suspects killed, one arrested
The Ghana Police Service foiled a planned robbery attack on three banks at Labone in Accra on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at about 10:45 a.m., after receiving intelligence that a robbery syndicate was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. During a shootout, two suspects were killed, and one, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, was arrested.
The police response team was deployed to the area where suspected robbers were spotted in two vehicles. One vehicle sped off, and Maazi was arrested from it, while the other occupant escaped. Occupants of the second vehicle attempted to flee while firing at police, who returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspects. Two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17, were recovered, along with a blow pistol. Maazi is in police custody assisting with investigations. The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue.
