Police probe clashes at Adjen Kotoku Onion Market
Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for individuals believed to be behind a disturbance and the unlawful firing of weapons at the Kotoku Onion Market in Adjen Kotoku. The incident occurred within the Amasaman Division under the Accra Regional Police Command. Police investigations suggest the unrest stemmed from tensions among five onion sellers' associations operating within the market.
The dispute reportedly arose over the allocation of onion supplies brought in by foreign traders, heightening friction among the groups. On April 6, a clash broke out between members of the rival associations, during which gunshots were fired from an unidentified source. Officers were deployed to the scene to restore order, but those responsible for the gunfire have not yet been identified or apprehended.
The Accra Regional Police Command has increased patrols and strengthened its presence in the area to prevent further disturbances. Authorities are also engaging leaders of the associations to promote dialogue and peaceful resolution. Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, said "the situation is now under control and is being closely monitored." She also "warned against violence and the illegal use of firearms, urging all parties to resolve their differences lawfully, and assured the public of the Police Service's commitment to maintaining safety and order."
