Family of UCC student found dead appeals to Interior Minister over stalled investigation

Innocentia Atsufui Avinu's family has appealed to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, to intervene in the stalled investigation into the 20-year-old's death. Her sister stated the family has not received a formal update from the Ghana Police Service since its last public statement on June 15, 2026. The family was verbally informed on July 22 to proceed with Innocentia's burial, without a formal explanation of the investigation's status or progress. Her sister questioned, "Justice in Ghana should not be a one-week wonder that disappears the moment social media moves on to the next trend."

The bereaved sister alleged that the family has struggled to reach investigators assigned to the case, claiming repeated calls to officers have gone unanswered. She is asking the Interior Minister to help the family establish the investigation's current standing and the steps being taken to conclude the case. She also raised questions about the special team reportedly assigned by the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the case, asking whether the team has been provided with the necessary resources.
