Hundreds displaced as Awutu Senya East Assembly demolishes structures at Kasoa Old Market
Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly carried out a demolition exercise at the Kasoa Old Market on Monday around 2:00 a.m. The Assembly cleared temporary structures along the main road to make way for the construction of permanent stores. Structures located in front of the main lorry station were pulled down as part of the exercise.
The move follows earlier resistance from petty traders, who last month opposed the Assembly's decision to remove the temporary structures. Abdul Rhaman Mohammed, a member of the Assembly who led the operation, said "the exercise was not abrupt," noting that authorities had engaged traders on several occasions prior to the demolition. Officials indicated that measures have been put in place to prevent traffic congestion within the Kasoa Central Business District during the demolition process.
Alternative trading space has been provided at the Kasoa Iron City Market, which was constructed by the previous administration. The demolition forms part of the Assembly's broader redevelopment agenda for the Kasoa Old Market.
