Multimedia Group condemns soldiers' assault on reporter in Nkwanta South
The Multimedia Group condemned the alleged assault of its Oti Regional Correspondent, Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, by military personnel enforcing a curfew in Nkwanta South on Saturday evening, July 11. The organization described the incident as "an attack on press freedom and the duty of journalists to report in the public interest." The journalist was covering the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections and remained at the venue beyond the 5:00 p.m. curfew because the electoral process was ongoing.
The reporter sustained injuries to his joints and other parts of his body and was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he remains on admission. His Multimedia-branded jacket was torn during the alleged assault. Personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Ghana Police Service, and election officials intervened to rescue the journalist and other civilians from the soldiers.
