Lashibi robbery attempt turns deadly as mobile money vendor kills attacker
A mobile money vendor killed an attacker on July 3, 2026, during a robbery attempt at Lashibi. The Sakumono District Police Command recovered GH¢140,000 and an AK-47 assault rifle after the incident. According to a police statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Supt. Juliana Obeng, the victim was attacked by two armed men on a motorbike while driving home from work with a bag containing the GH¢140,000. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim's vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and the front windscreen, before trying to make away with the cash. The statement said the victim, however, returned fire, killing one of them at the scene.
The other suspect escaped, abandoning the bag containing the GH¢140,000, which police subsequently recovered. A search on the deceased suspect led to the retrieval of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines containing fifty-five rounds of live ammunition, an additional eleven rounds of live ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukwu, aged 46. Police also recovered five AK-47 spent shells and two pistol spent shells from the scene. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy, and identification. Efforts are underway to track down the accomplice who fled.
