Adaklu Mountain now a security zone - Volta Regional Minister
James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, declared Adaklu Mountain a security zone after leading a delegation on Wednesday to Adaklu Helekpe to assess damage from a mudslide. He stated, "We cannot guarantee the safety of anybody going there, so the mountain has been declared a security zone."
The delegation included Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu; Jerry Yao Ameko, the Adaklu District Chief Executive; and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation. The mudslide, caused by over five hours of torrential rainfall, destroyed vehicles, agricultural machinery, buildings, and personal effects. Mr. Agbodza stated that destroying the vegetative cover of the mountain could result in such occurrences. A woman and her three-year-old son were injured and admitted to the Ho Teaching Hospital. Reverend Jacob Reddekopp said he was grateful that no life was lost.
Mr. Gunu asked NADMO officials to cordon off the area and advised people to stay off the mountain. He said, "I will ask the Geological Survey Department and NADMO officials to conduct feasibility studies to ascertain the cause of the mudslide." The mudslide created a deep gorge from the top to the foot of the mountain in which water was gushing.
