Assin Fosu court orders mental examination for woman accused of assaulting 10-year-old daughter

Monica Ampomah, a 28-year-old trader, was remanded into police custody by the Assin Fosu District Court after she allegedly assaulted her 10-year-old daughter. Presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, the court ordered Ampomah to undergo a mental examination to determine her fitness to stand trial. She is expected to reappear before the court on September 3, 2026.

According to police prosecutor Matilda Osaah Buabeng, the incident occurred in the early hours of July 21, 2026, after Ampomah became suspicious about a whitish discharge in her daughter's underwear. The prosecutor stated that the mother suspected the Class Five pupil was being sexually abused and was concealing information. At about 3:00 a.m., Ampomah allegedly woke the child and demanded identification of the responsible person. When the girl denied abuse, Ampomah allegedly beat her with a cane, then a metal rod, and later used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the child's head, hand, and finger. The injured child was reportedly forced out of the room at about 4:00 a.m. and sought refuge with her school proprietress, who contacted Gilbert Takyi, a nurse at the St Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, for medical attention.
