Princess Umul Hatiyya - The Ghanaian woman who's travelled to 90 countries
Princess Umul Hatiyya travelled to 90 countries by 2025. Her first trip was to Burkina Faso in 2007. She has been to Panama, Jordan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mauritania, Nepal, Andorra, Namibia, Nicaragua, Mexico, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Djibouti, Guinea Bissau, India, Senegal, Ireland, Mali, Egypt, Spain, Finland, New Zealand and many other countries.
She did this as a solo female traveller. She says, "Adventure is my oxygen. It keeps me alive. You cannot separate adventure from who I am." She says without adventure, she would feel hollow. Her love of travel was shaped by her upbringing and early exposure to books and adventure. Her parents were voracious readers and sent her to the library in Tamale twice a week. At St. Mary's Secondary School in Accra, her Geography Teacher, Mrs Owusu Darko, brought geography to life. She studied geography for her A' Levels at OLA Girls' School in Ho. She became captivated by Ibn Battuta, the Moroccan explorer who travelled across Africa, Asia, and the Iberian Peninsula from 1325 to 1354.
