Interior Ministry extends deadline for firearm licence renewal to December 2026
The Ministry of the Interior has extended the deadline for private firearm licence holders to renew their permits to December 31, 2026. This extension was announced by Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, during his appearance before Parliament's Assurances Committee on Tuesday, July 7. The decision was made in response to devastating floods that affected seven regions, displacing thousands and making compliance with new licensing requirements difficult for many firearm owners. Mr. Muntaka stated, "Initially we sent a message and then we had this flood that has affected seven regions; we are rational human beings. People are going through a lot of challenges and trauma. Based on the data that we have, over a hundred thousand people are having these challenges."
Government considered it inappropriate to place additional pressure on affected citizens. Under the revised arrangement, firearm owners with valid licences can keep their weapons until their permits expire, but they must undergo mandatory firearms training, mental health assessments, and drug tests before renewal. Applicants who have already started the renewal process will have their applications completed under the new timeline. This extension revises an earlier directive from June 23 that suspended all registered firearm licences.
