Gold Fields Foundation Targets Emergency Care, Maternal Health In New Investments
Gold Fields Ghana Foundation announced major new investments in healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment and preventive healthcare programmes during the Annual General Meeting of the Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG). The foundation emerged as one of the notable sponsors of the event, and received an award from SOFPOG for its investment in healthcare delivery and infrastructure. Ayisha Muhammed Aubyn, a Senior Officer at the Foundation, delivered a presentation highlighting the Foundation's expanding role in Ghana's health sector.
Key projects announced include the construction of a modern Accident and Emergency Centre at the Apinto Government Hospital and a full renovation of the hospital's Out-Patient Department (OPD). The Foundation also plans to provide critical medical equipment. According to Mrs. Aubyn, "We are going to fully renovate the OPD department and supply everything needed for efficient service delivery." The Foundation is pursuing plans to establish a long-term medical equipment hub in the Western Region. The Foundation secured three containers of medical equipment and consumables last year through partnerships with Project Care, and five additional containers are expected this year. The presentation also highlighted the Foundation's investments in maternal and adolescent healthcare programmes.
The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation collaborates with healthcare organizations to improve maternal healthcare services and implements adolescent health education programmes in public basic schools. The Foundation has invested in maternity blocks, staff accommodation facilities and renovations of healthcare infrastructure. The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has invested more than GH¢109 million in sectors including health, education, water and sanitation, with over GH¢5.5 million directed into healthcare interventions.
