GNAT raises alarm over acute teacher accommodation deficit in Asunafo districts
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) raised concern over what it describes as an acute accommodation deficit affecting teachers in both the Asunafo North and Asunafo South Districts. This occurred in the Asunafo District of the Ahafo Region.
Peter Bonsu, the District GNAT Chairman, said that the shortage of teacher accommodation in rural communities is negatively affecting teaching and learning, as many teachers are unable to secure decent housing in their posting areas. He noted that teachers in remote communities are often compelled to travel long distances on motorbikes and tricycles, popularly known as "pragya," a situation he said poses serious safety and health risks. Isaac Ayitey, the GNAT Secretary for the Asunafo Districts, also highlighted the struggles faced by female teachers, saying that many of them are burdened by inadequate accommodation, which affects their daily work. He added that the lack of suitable housing forces some teachers to commute long distances, exposing them to hardship and safety risks.
Mr. Bonsu called on government and local authorities to prioritise the construction of teachers' quarters, particularly in rural areas. He argued that addressing the issue would improve teacher retention and enhance the quality of education delivery in the two districts.
Quick Summary
GNAT in the Asunafo District has raised concerns about a teacher accommodation deficit affecting both the North and South districts- and its impact on teaching. The shortage forces many teachers into difficult commutes- but the challenges don't stop there.
