Thomas-Asante was born in Milton Keynes to a Ghanaian father and a Jamaican mother. Impressive form in the fourth tier secured him a move to Steve Bruce's Championship West Bromwich Albion, where he was the club's top scorer in his debut season, before moving to Coventry two years later.
