Francophone ambassadors mark La Francophonie Day, spotlight Ghana's growing role
Assiélou Félix Tanon, President of the Group of Francophone Ambassadors in Ghana (GAF), stressed on the growing importance of Ghana within the global Francophone community on March 20, 2026 in Accra. He noted that the annual celebration commemorates the establishment of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, a body that has, over the years, promoted the French language as a tool for dialogue, solidarity, and international cooperation. According to him, more than 321 million people worldwide use French as a medium for communication.
Assiélou Félix Tanon commended Ghana for officially joining the Francophone family in October 2024, describing the move as a significant step toward deepening the country's engagement with French-speaking nations. The 2026 global celebration is being held under the theme; "Education for Peace: The Contribution of Youth to a More Peaceful World," while in Ghana, the commemoration is particularly under the theme; "Positioning Ghana within the Francophone Space: Language, Partnerships and Opportunities." He explained that the theme underpins the strategic relevance of the French language, particularly given Ghana's location within a predominantly Francophone region.
The Francophone ambassadors reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the learning of French and in the strengthening of partnerships in education, culture, and economic development. Tanon added that the group would continue to collaborate closely with Ghanaian authorities and the international community to ensure that the French language serves as a bridge between cultures and a tool for dialogue and development.
