GPHA announces urgent measures to ease congestion at Tema Port

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) announced a series of urgent operational measures to address growing landside congestion at the Port of Tema, assuring stakeholders that efforts are underway to restore normal cargo flow and maintain efficient port operations. The congestion is driven by a significant increase in import volumes, a corresponding rise in exports of empty containers, and increasing road traffic challenges around the port enclave. Similar congestion-related challenges are being experienced at several ports across the West African sub-region.

In response, GPHA has activated enhanced operational interventions and placed all relevant stakeholders on heightened operational alert. Measures include accelerating the evacuation of empty containers through increased vessel calls, strengthening container transfer operations, deploying additional trucks, improving the handling and storage of empty containers, and optimising yard and traffic management systems within the port. GPHA has also appealed to importers, clearing agents, and cargo owners to expedite the clearance and evacuation of their consignments from the port, stressing that prompt removal of cargo is critical.
