The Foundation stated, "The cold weather and seasonal changes have contributed to a rise in painful sickle cell crises, infections and other serious complications." It has received a significant increase in distress calls and requests for assistance from patients and caregivers across the country.
FoSCel noted that seasonal conditions have triggered more painful sickle cell crises, infections, and other serious complications, leading to higher hospital admissions and placing emotional and financial strain on affected families. The Foundation is calling on government, the Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), healthcare providers, development partners, corporate organisations, and the general public to strengthen support for sickle cell patients. FoSCel also advised patients to keep warm, drink plenty of fluids, take prescribed medications consistently, avoid prolonged exposure to cold weather, and seek immediate medical attention at the earliest signs of a crisis.
