Flood mitigation: PRINPAG urges urban planning reforms, attitudinal change
The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) emphasized the need for comprehensive urban planning and attitudinal change as part of flood mitigation measures in Accra and other parts of the country following the June 29 floods. President of PRINPAG, Mr David Tamakloe, stated, "The [June 29] devastation should serve as a catalyst for comprehensive urban renewal. Government must move beyond temporary fixes and commit to a holistic strategy that includes zero tolerance for construction on waterways and flood-prone zones."
PRINPAG urged the Government to replan and reshape cities, enforce building codes, and intensify public education. The Association called on citizens to respect environmental and spatial planning laws and adopt proper solid waste disposal practices. PRINPAG expressed solidarity with citizens affected by the floods and called for investment in modern drainage infrastructure, engagement of urban planners and local communities, and sustained public campaigns on environmental stewardship. The Association also urged media houses and content creators to provide accurate information, amplify affected voices, highlight relief efforts, and educate citizens on safety measures.
