Fears of a massacre in this city on the front line of Sudan's war
Fears of a massacre in el-Obeid, Sudan, are rising as the city experiences increased violence. A 27-year-old university student, Sarah, was at a crowded fuel station in el-Obeid when a drone struck without warning. She stated, "In front of us there were injured people, blood, burnt cars, and smashed cars." Sarah sustained injuries, including shrapnel in her leg and hand, after a second missile struck.
El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state with a population of around 500,000, is currently under army control and has one of the largest military bases in central Sudan. The city experienced 27 drone strikes in June, the highest monthly total since the conflict began, according to Acled. UN human rights chief Volker Turk reported that at least 45 people were killed and 41 injured in 15 drone strikes between 6 and 28 June. Turk added that the city has been under siege-like conditions for 18 months, with summary executions, abductions, torture, and sexual violence occurring along routes used by people fleeing the conflict. He stated, "The signs from el-Obeid are clear and unmistakable: Another human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan." Nathaniel Raymond of Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab stated el-Obeid is strategically significant for the warring sides.
