Akufo-Addo urges African youth to champion education for continental transformation
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo challenged young people across Africa to become leading advocates for education as the Special Guest at the Third West Africa Youth Summit in Accra. He described access to quality learning as "the single most important investment the continent can make to secure sustainable development and prosperity."
He stated that Africa's ability to overcome poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment depends on educating its youthful population. Akufo-Addo reflected on his administration's education reforms, noting the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme was introduced to remove financial barriers. Before this policy, close to one million Ghanaian children were denied secondary education over a period of about ten years due to cost. He warned that this posed a serious threat to the country's future human resource development. The implementation of Free SHS expanded access, particularly for girls and children from poor and vulnerable households.
