You can't trade lives for fiscal discipline - Oppong Nkrumah blasts government over flood deaths
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Ranking Member on Parliament's Economy and Development Committee, criticized the Mahama administration for its handling of recurring flood disasters. Speaking on JoyNews in response to recent flooding that claimed at least 37 lives and displaced thousands of residents, he stated the government's explanation that it withheld spending to stabilize the economy was unacceptable. He argued that the government cannot justify the loss of life by citing fiscal discipline and expenditure controls, insisting that no level of fiscal consolidation can compensate for lives lost.
The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP's comments follow renewed public debate over Ghana's flood management system after severe rains submerged communities, destroyed homes and businesses, and claimed dozens of lives. He stated the Minority has never opposed the demolition of structures built on waterways and rejected attempts to suggest otherwise. Oppong Nkrumah also accused government representatives of blaming institutions such as the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and ordinary citizens while refusing to accept responsibility.
