'Why increase utility tariffs?' - GUTA says economic indicators point the other way
The Ghana Union of Traders' Associations (GUTA) questioned the rationale behind the latest utility tariff increases. GUTA Vice President Joseph Paddy stated on Joy News' PM Express on Tuesday that traders were caught off guard and not consulted before the decision. He quoted, "We slept one night, woke up in the morning, and we heard announcements that they're going to be tariff adjustment increase, and we're like, why, when we were not engaged."
Mr. Paddy insisted that meaningful stakeholder consultation is essential for good governance before implementing decisions affecting businesses and consumers. He challenged the basis for the tariff adjustment, arguing that the reasons outlined by regulators, including the fluctuation of the cedi, were all in a positive direction. He noted the cedi's stability against the dollar for over 15 to 16 months, with the exchange rate at about ¢11.25 to a dollar, which he considered a positive direction.
