University of Ghana suspends lectures as flooding prompts emergency safety measures
University of Ghana has temporarily suspended lectures and directed students to remain indoors following torrential rains that triggered widespread flooding across Accra on Monday. The decision was announced in an emergency safety advisory, with the university advising students not to attempt travelling to campus until weather conditions improve and floodwaters recede. The notice stated, "Stay indoors wherever you are now; in your hall, at home or current location. Do not attempt to come for lectures or travel until the rains and flooding subside."
Management explained that the suspension of lectures forms part of precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding students and staff from the dangers associated with the severe weather. The university indicated that academic activities would resume only after the situation had stabilised and it was safe for students and lecturers to return to campus. The advisory was signed by the Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate (AAD). The university's directive follows heavy rainfall that caused extensive flooding in several parts of the Greater Accra Region, leaving commuters stranded and forcing many motorists to abandon their vehicles.
