U-17 AFCON: Black Starlets face must-win South Africa clash after Senegal setback
Black Starlets face a must-win clash against South Africa at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. According to Sheikh Tophic, Media Officer of the Black Starlets, "The only choice Ghana has against South Africa is to win."
Ghana's hopes of advancing were dealt a blow after a 1-0 defeat to a 10-man Senegal side on Sunday, leaving them with just a single point from two matches and at the bottom of the group standings. Sheikh Tophic described the upcoming clash with South Africa as decisive for Ghana's campaign, explaining that "South Africa won their game 2-1 against Senegal and lost to Algeria, so they need a point against Ghana to qualify to the next phase of the competition because the competition is such that 10 countries will represent Africa at the World Cup." He added that "Two of the best third-place finishers will be picked in addition to the top two in every group to make 10 to go to the World Cup."
Ghana will take on South Africa on May 20, with kick off scheduled at 19:00 GMT. Only victory will realistically keep their qualification hopes alive.
