Samson's Take: Blood on your hands, you failed leaders
Samson stated on a Monday morning that Accra is submerged, and leaders are watching from dry balconies. He noted that the sky had poured all night, the city was paralyzed, storm drains were choked, and water was aggressively reclaiming its territory. Samson recalled that eleven years ago, on June 3, 2015, more than 150 citizens burned and drowned in a national trauma, and "Never Again" was sworn.
Samson asserted that the reality for hundreds of survivors is heavier, and the numbers are greater, with scarred faces, burnt bodies, torn families, and erased livelihoods behind every statistic. He mentioned that in court, some break down under trauma and strain, and many cannot afford transport to attend hearings but still show up. Samson highlighted that medical bills continue to pile up years after the flames were extinguished. He emphasized that the country does not suffer a deficit of laws or policies, stating that the tools already exist and that ignoring all others, three popular laws stand out with one mandate: enforce or be complicit. These laws include The Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which criminalizes choking drains and littering; The Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, Act 925, which gives local authorities the right to demolish buildings on waterways and jail offenders for up to four years; and The Local Governance Act, Act 936, which mandates MMDCEs to aggressively act.
