Road contractors to lose automatic deadline extensions - Minister Agbodza
Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, cautioned contractors on May 11 during a nationwide inspection tour of road projects that the government will no longer grant automatic extensions for poorly executed or delayed contracts. He stated, "Contractors who abandon sites or fail to work for several months cannot later rely on excuses to demand extensions."
Mr. Agbodza explained that some firms leave project sites unattended for months, then return and request extensions, which the government will no longer tolerate. The Ministry will still consider genuine challenges affecting project execution, assessing them in line with existing contractual agreements, provided contractors demonstrate commitment.
The Minister observed that some contractors underperformed, while others made good progress and worked ahead of schedule. He maintained that the new approach aims to improve efficiency, ensure value for money, and accelerate the delivery of road infrastructure across the country.
