A Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School teacher accused of assaulting an 18-year-old final-year student has been re-arraigned before the Nyinahin District Court and granted bail in the sum of GH₵80,000.
The accused, 39-year-old Eric Apaflo Buernortey, appeared before the court on Friday on a charge of assault. He pleaded not guilty.
The case relates to an incident that allegedly occurred on June 8, 2026, at about midday at a hostel near the school. Prosecutors say the complainant, Patricia Chibu, was a final-year student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, while Buernortey was a tutor at the same school and caretaker of Adusei Hostel, which is located adjacent to the campus.
The Nyinahin District Court granted Eric Apaflo Buernortey bail of GH₵80,000 with three sureties, all of whom must live within the court's jurisdiction.
Court Sets Bail Conditions
The Nyinahin District Court was presided over by a relieving judge, Lord Delvin Essandoh. After hearing the matter, the court admitted Buernortey to bail with three sureties. The sureties are required to be residents within the jurisdiction of the court.
The court also ordered the accused teacher to report to the case investigator every two weeks on Mondays. That condition keeps the accused within reach of investigators while the case proceeds through the judicial process.
This is the second time Buernortey has been put before the court over the allegation. He was first arraigned after the matter came to public attention on June 8, 2026. However, prosecutors later withdrew the matter, leading to his discharge at the time.
His latest appearance means the case has returned formally to court, with the assault charge now set to be tested through the legal process. Since the accused has pleaded not guilty, the prosecution will be required to prove its case with evidence.
Prosecution Outlines Alleged Hostel Incident
Chief Inspector Eric Owusu, who led the prosecution, told the court that the alleged assault followed a confrontation at Adusei Hostel. According to the prosecution, Buernortey cautioned the complainant and some male students occupying the hostel over alleged misconduct.
The court heard that the exchange escalated after the complainant allegedly insulted and mocked the teacher. Prosecutors said the remarks offended Buernortey, after which he allegedly attacked and assaulted the student.
The prosecution's account placed the incident at about 12:00 noon on June 8, 2026. It also linked the confrontation directly to the accused person's role as caretaker of the hostel, in addition to his teaching position at the school.
According to the prosecution, the situation did not end with the alleged assault. The complainant reportedly invited some town residents to the scene. Those residents, the court heard, attempted to lynch the teacher.
Police intervention prevented the alleged mob attack. A police patrol team arrived at the scene in time, rescued the teacher, and took both the accused and the complainant to the police station.
- The accused is Eric Apaflo Buernortey, 39, a tutor at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.
- The complainant is Patricia Chibu, 18, a final-year student of the school.
- The alleged incident happened on June 8, 2026, at about 12:00 noon.
- The case is before the Nyinahin District Court in the Ashanti Region.
- The accused has pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault.
Medical Form And Investigation
After the parties were taken to the police station, the complainant was issued with a police medical form to seek treatment. Prosecutors said she later returned the form duly endorsed by a medical officer.
The accused person was detained as part of the investigation. The court was told that investigators conducted their inquiries and obtained a caution statement from Buernortey.
Those steps form part of the prosecution's case as it moves forward. In assault-related cases, medical documentation can become an important part of the evidence, particularly where the court must determine the nature and extent of any injuries alleged by the complainant.
The case has also drawn public attention because it involves a teacher, a student, and a school-related environment. Incidents involving alleged violence in educational settings often raise wider concerns about discipline, supervision, student welfare, and the limits of authority.
At this stage, however, the matter remains a criminal case before the court. The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The court's bail decision does not determine guilt or innocence. It only allows the accused to remain out of custody while complying with the conditions imposed by the court.
Court Warns Public Against Misinformation
The presiding court also issued a clear warning to the public over commentary on the matter. The court said it would not tolerate misinformation about proceedings before it.
"The public is hereby cautioned against any misinformation in respect of the matter, as any misinformation would not be tolerated," the court said.
The warning is significant in a case that has already attracted attention beyond the courtroom. Public discussion of criminal proceedings can easily create confusion when allegations, eyewitness claims, and unverified accounts circulate ahead of the evidence being tested in court.
For the school community in Nyinahin, the case is likely to remain sensitive. A student has made an allegation of assault, a teacher is facing prosecution, and the incident reportedly triggered a near-violent reaction from some town residents. Those facts make restraint important as the case continues.
The next stages of the matter will determine how the prosecution presents its evidence and how the defence responds. For now, Buernortey has secured bail, must report to investigators every two weeks on Mondays, and will continue to face the assault charge before the Nyinahin District Court.
