NIA workers to strike over delayed migration implementation
National Identification Authority (NIA) workers are expected to embark on a nationwide strike from May 13, 2026, over delays in the approval and implementation of migration reports. The Public Services Workers' Union issued the notice in a letter dated May 6, 2026, and addressed to the Executive Secretaries of the National Labour Commission and the NIA.
The planned industrial action follows prolonged delays in the implementation of the staff migration exercise, despite the approval of the Scheme of Service in July 2024 and the commencement of the migration process in December 2024. The union said the delay has denied workers proper placement, corresponding salaries, and outstanding promotions. According to the letter, "Twenty-two months since the approval of the Scheme of Service, and despite the completion of the process and subsequent submission of reports, as well as follow-ups by both the union and management, the Ministry of Finance is yet to grant approval for payment of staff." The union explained that it had engaged management and relevant stakeholders on several occasions to resolve the matter, but efforts to secure the necessary approvals had not yielded results. The union warned that the continued delay threatens the relatively peaceful industrial atmosphere within the authority.
The union stated that, "By a copy of this letter, and without further recourse, we will accordingly proceed with the planned industrial action if we do not receive the necessary approvals for implementation of the migration reports for staff of the NIA by 13th May 2026".
