He was returning from a state visit to Tenkodogo in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) where he had discussions with President Maurice Yaméogo and signed agreements for the Volta River Project. A young schoolgirl presented a bouquet of flowers to Dr. Nkrumah, which contained a hidden explosive device that detonated as the flowers reached him.
The explosion occurred just five years after Ghana declared independence. Dr. Nkrumah survived the attack. The event transformed a moment of celebration into chaos, with screams replacing cheers and panic replacing excitement.
