Newtown building collapse: 20 rescued, 3 confirmed dead
Newtown building collapse resulted in 3 confirmed dead and 20 rescued at the Accra New Town Experimental School. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed this during a media briefing after the first phase of search and rescue operations at the scene. According to him, the figures were carefully verified through coordinated efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service.
Out of a total of 23 victims, the Minister confirmed that 3, comprising one male and two females, lost their lives. The identities of the deceased are yet to be officially released. The remaining 20 survivors are currently receiving medical care at facilities including the Police Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Maamobi General Hospital, and a private health facility. Further details indicate that 15 of the victims are female, while 8 are male. Among the survivors are 7 minors. The Minister clarified that none of the deceased were minors. He commended emergency responders for their swift and coordinated response, describing their efforts as "commendable after working through the night to rescue victims and account for those affected."
Authorities say investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, as attention now shifts to supporting victims and their families.
