Heath Goldfields' return brings relief to families in Bogoso-Prestea after two years of hardship
Heath Goldfields Limited resumed operations at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine after nearly two years. According to Francis Kwofie, a Mill Operator with Heath Goldfields Limited, the return to work marks the end of one of the most difficult periods of his life, saying "Things weren't easy".
The mine's previous shutdown led to job losses and economic uncertainty for workers and their families. Francis Kwofie said he spent nearly two years at home after operations ceased, and that he had to take a loan to pay for his child's education at the University of Education, Winneba. Enoch Cobbinah, a Mechanical Leading Hand, said the shutdown forced him to return to driving his taxi to feed his family. Control Room Operator Emmanuel Anokye Asante said that losing his income after two decades of working in the mining industry was difficult.
The return of Heath Goldfields Limited has brought back activity to the mine, with heavy equipment in motion and gold production resumed. Francis Kwofie said that when the company shut down, businesses went down, and now that Heath has come back, their business has come back.
