GJA gives NDC Chairman 7-day ultimatum to apologise publicly over Obaatanpa Radio attack
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has given Richard Asiedu, the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a seven-day ultimatum to publicly apologise, compensate Obaatanpa Radio, and report himself to the police over the invasion and temporary shutdown of the Kasoa-based radio station. GJA President Albert Dwumfour described the incident as a serious attack on press freedom, stating the association's investigations point to "an act of intimidation and lawlessness that has no place in Ghana's democracy."
Information gathered by the GJA indicates that on June 25, 2026, a group allegedly led by Mr. Asiedu, along with Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive Seth Banini and Constituency NADMO Coordinator Nyash Nyande, stormed Obaatanpa Radio shortly after 10 a.m. The group allegedly assaulted producer Bernard Mireku, forced staff out, and locked the station after discussions on an internal NDC matter involving the regional chairman. Members of the group allegedly declared they were "now in power," accused the station of bias, and warned staff that the incident was "only the beginning." Normal operations resumed after the Central Regional Police Command, led by DCOP Francis Nchor, intervened. The assault case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra for further investigations.
