Floods killing Ghana's economy - Peter Quartey
Professor Peter Quartey, an economist, warned on Thursday on Joy News' PM Express Business Edition that Ghana's worsening flood crisis is silently draining the economy through lost productivity, traffic congestion, business disruptions, and human suffering. He stated, "I am very worried, because it looks like we are wasting money. We are not investing our money efficiently or properly."
His comments followed Monday's floods in Accra, parts of the Central Region, and other communities, which killed 18 people and destroyed properties worth millions of cedis. Professor Quartey noted that the government's WASH program invests between ¢750 and ¢780 million a year, with 80 to 90% of that money being donor-funded. He cited recent drainage works on the Weija to Kasoa Road near the West Mills Mall junction as an example of poor engineering, where storm drains are choked and water runs on the streets.
