Emergency action launched by GES after Accra New Town Experimental School incident
Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), announced immediate measures to evaluate the safety of uncompleted school infrastructure after the collapse at Accra New Town Experimental School. Prof. Davis stated that an emergency meeting will be held at the GES headquarters to review the incident and draw lessons to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He said, "For now, we are going to have an emergency meeting at the headquarters to assess the issue and look at the lessons learnt."
The Estate Department of GES will work closely with regional directors to inspect the structural integrity of uncompleted buildings and other facilities currently in use across the country. Prof. Davis explained, "The aim is to ensure that such spaces are safe for use and to take immediate action where necessary," and expressed relief that the collapse occurred over the weekend when students were not in school. Authorities are coordinating with security agencies to clear the affected site, and students will only be allowed back once it is deemed safe.
With an upcoming short vacation period, Prof. Davis is hopeful that safety assessments will be completed before students resume classes. The GES will continue to engage both regional and national directors to ensure that all school structures are safe, prioritizing the welfare of students and staff.
