100 new buses arrive to ease transport challenges
The government unveiled a new fleet of buses on Sunday, April 5, 2026, aimed at easing ongoing road transport challenges across the country, particularly in major cities and towns including Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, "100 29-seater buses have arrived in the country to ease recent road transport challenges." The 100 buses are set to be allocated to Metro Mass Transit Limited to strengthen the existing fleet.
The government plans to procure a total of 300 buses. According to Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister of Transport and Jomoro MP, "The arrival of these first 100 mini-buses proves that we are not sitting idle regarding the transport struggles of the public". The 29-seater buses feature onboard phone charging ports, a "Tap n' Go" automated ticketing system, and Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI).
An additional 100 buses are expected in August and the final batch arriving in November. Manufacturers and investors will manage maintenance for the first 12 months, while local MMT engineers undergo intensive training. Additional privately-owned buses are expected to arrive between March and April.
