Ghana Prisons Service issued a public disclaimer dated May 4, 2026, cautioning citizens against impersonation and fraud on social media platforms. According to a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs at the Prisons Headquarters, Janet Asabea, the Service revealed that some individuals are falsely posing as its officials, including the Director-General, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, to deceive unsuspecting members of the public for financial gain. The Service stressed that it has not authorised any individual to solicit money, gifts, or personal information on its behalf through unofficial channels, particularly via social media, and that it "does not demand payment at any stage of recruitment or for any official service."
The public is being urged to remain vigilant, avoid engaging with suspicious persons, and refrain from making payments or sharing personal information with unverified individuals. Citizens are also encouraged to report suspected cases to the nearest police station or through official Prisons Service channels.
The Service warned that it will not be held liable for any losses resulting from dealings with impostors. It added that it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to track down and prosecute those responsible.
