Lands Ministry advances responsible cooperative mining initiative at Nkaseim
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has intensified efforts to establish the Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP) at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region as part of measures to address illegal mining. This follows an engagement between ministry officials and traditional leaders in the area, who petitioned the government to introduce responsible cooperative mining. George Dadzi Junior, Deputy National Coordinator in charge of Cooperative Mining, stated that all necessary documentation and processes for the program's establishment have been completed.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources is expected to visit the community soon to officially inaugurate the initiative. Nana Sarfo Kantanka, the Twafohene, welcomed the development, describing the planned inauguration as "the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration of the chiefs to replace illegal mining with a regulated and responsible alternative." He expressed confidence the program would curb illegal mining, create employment, and improve livelihoods. Nana Yentumi Boateng, the Dabihene, appealed to the ministry to adhere to the proposed timeline for the inauguration.
