From Bare floors to desks: Wa East's fight to give pupils a place to learn
Dr. Godred Seidu Jassaw, Wa East Member of Parliament, donated two thousand dual and mono desks to schools in the Wa East district. This action aims to change the reality for thousands of pupils in Wa East, one of the poorest districts in the Upper West Region, where children sit on the floor during lessons.
Inadequate school structures and a chronic lack of furniture have made teaching in Wa East a daily struggle for years. Dr. Jassaw used a portion of the District Assembly Common Fund to procure 1,000 study desks for 27 schools across the district. He also tapped support from development partners like Plan Ghana, who provided over 950 desks, while he provided over 250 mono and dual desks. Wa East DCE Adamu Shayibu praised the MP's initiative and requested the community to maintain the desks. Kilanjong Naa Adama Salia, speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Manwe, Naa Alhaji Yussif Wie, thanked the MP, the DCE, and Plan Ghana. Wa East Director of Education, Yahaya Mumuni Abdul Rahman Seinu, lamented about the situation.
Many schools still lack proper structures, but for 27 schools and counting, the floor is no longer the classroom.
Quick Summary
Pupils in Wa East, one of Ghana's poorest districts, have had to learn on bare floors due to inadequate school infrastructure- a situation that has made teaching and learning difficult. The donation of desks promises to improve education, but what impact will this have?
