Drowning in data, dying from bad decisions -BigData Ghana CEO charges Africa to act
Mr. Baffoe, Managing Director and Co-Founder of BigData Ghana Limited, charged Africa to act when he took the floor at the 50th anniversary of the Department of Geomatic Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on Friday. He argued that Ghana does not lack data, but rather the will and infrastructure to act on it, stating, "Africa does not only have a data problem. Africa has a decision problem."
Prof. Samuel Andam-Akorful, Head of Department, stated that the department is preparing to be a modern department that trains the best geospatial professionals. Mr. Baffoe noted that the continent has accumulated more data than at any previous point in its history, including satellite imagery, climate records, agricultural surveys, census data, and mobile network information stretching back decades. He also mentioned that spatial risk data for recently flooded corridors in Accra has been available for years.
