KMA orders removal of unauthorized canopies, awnings at shop frontages in Kumasi
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to all shop owners and occupiers within the metropolis who have erected unauthorized canopies, awnings, and sheds at the frontage of their premises to remove them immediately. This public notice, dated Monday, August 10, 2026, and signed by the Public Relations Unit of KMA, states that the unauthorized structures obstruct pedestrian movement, encroach on public spaces and road reserves, and impede emergency access.
KMA also stated that the structures "create environmental and safety hazards, and detract the orderly development and appearance of the Metropolis." Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the Assembly to remove the offending structures without further notice, with the cost of any forced removal borne by the owners or occupiers. Offenders may also be liable to prosecution. Shop owners are directed to contact the Physical Planning Department of KMA for further information.
