CPP blames poor environmental management for Accra floods, calls for urgent emergency response
The Convention People's Party (CPP) described the severe flooding that swept through parts of Accra following Monday's heavy rains as a "self-inflicted disaster," blaming poor environmental management and weak enforcement of planning regulations. In a statement issued by its National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the party said the widespread destruction was avoidable and attributed the flooding to persistent encroachment on waterways and indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems.
According to the CPP, authorities have failed to address illegal developments and poor sanitation, which have contributed to recurring flooding. The party warned that the situation could deteriorate further as more rainfall is expected and urged the government to mount a swift and coordinated emergency response. It called on the Ghana Navy to deploy speedboats and water rescue units to assist in evacuating residents. The CPP also appealed to the Ministry of Energy to immediately shut down electricity supply in flooded areas where water has reached power installations to prevent electrocution.
