TVET workers lay down tools as union declares nationwide strike
Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service has begun a nationwide strike after management failed to take "'concrete and satisfactory steps' to address long-standing grievances." The strike began on March 24, 2026, after an ultimatum set by the GTVET-PSWU Divisional Union on March 13, 2026, lapsed. Seth Botchway, the Divisional IMC Secretary, instructed all members of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) within the TVET Service to withdraw their services effective Tuesday, March 24, 2026, if their demands were not met.
The union maintains that the industrial action became unavoidable after repeated attempts to engage management yielded no results. Members had raised several issues, some dating back to March 10, 2026, but management failed to respond adequately. The union leaders said the outstanding matters have persisted for months, affecting the welfare and working conditions of staff across the TVET system. Workers have also been asked to submit any additional concerns so they can be factored into ongoing negotiations whenever dialogue resumes.
The union stressed that it remains open to discussions and urged the Ghana TVET Service to handle the unresolved issues "with the urgency and seriousness they deserve" to avoid further disruption to teaching and administrative work nationwide. Members have been cautioned to remain calm, disciplined and law-abiding throughout the strike. The union warned that any intimidation, coercion or victimisation should be reported immediately to leadership for redress.
