May 9 Disaster: The day Ghana football died and never fully resurrected
May 9 Disaster resulted in 126 deaths on May 9, 2001, at the Accra Sports Stadium. More than thirty thousand supporters were present for a Premier League fixture between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko. The stadium had been full since 10 am in the morning.
Kotoko supporters threw seats and bottles onto the pitch after Hearts of Oak led 2-1. Riot police fired thundershots, then tear gas and rubber bullets into the north stand. Thousands surged toward the exits, but several gates were locked. The stampede lasted approximately thirty minutes. A Commission of Inquiry chaired by lawyer Sam Okudzeto identified police excesses as the principal cause and named six officers bearing direct responsibility. Each was charged with 127 counts of manslaughter, but all six were acquitted.
Before 2001, the average Ghana Premier League attendance ran between 8,000 and 12,000 per match. By 2023, it had collapsed to fewer than 800. Outside the entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium stands a bronze statue of a supporter carrying another to safety, with an inscription that reads: "I am My Brother's Keeper." Yearly, commemoration services are held to mark this tragic disaster.
