Government targets December 2027 to complete Odaw River desilting project
Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, announced that the government's desilting and dredging works on the Odaw River are expected to be completed by December 2027. This project is part of efforts to reduce flooding in Accra. The Minister disclosed this in Parliament while responding to a question from Ralph Opoku Adusei, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai.
Mr. Adjei explained that the exercise forms part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, which aims to improve drainage infrastructure and mitigate perennial flooding in the capital. He told Parliament: "The desilting and dredging contract for the Odaw River is being implemented as part of the GARID Project. The project commenced in February 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2027, with resources allocated under the GARID Project." He stated the project is expected to significantly improve the capacity of the Odaw River and reduce the risk of flooding. Mr. Adjei also addressed concerns over flooding at Ofankor and assured Parliament of the Ministry's commitment to delivering flood control projects.
