'Why not?' - COP Donkor opens up on possibility of becoming IGP
Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), responded to public calls on March 26, 2026 on Starr FM, stating that "if the appointing authorities deem it fit for me to be appointed, why not? I've been trained to be ready." She did not rule out the possibility of becoming Inspector General of Police (IGP).
COP Donkor believes that "every officer at the rank of commissioner is capable of being appointed" as IGP. She reflected on her time with the Girl Scouts, emphasizing that she is ready to take on the IGP role if offered. COP Donkor was promoted to the rank of COP in 2025 after being appointed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on March 19, 2025.
COP Donkor is also a senior lawyer called to the Bar over 25 years ago. She began her career as an associate at Acquah-Sampson and Associates. She served as a pro bono advocate for the Legal Aid Board in Takoradi. She served in various capacities in the Ghana Police Service, including Head of Legal and Prosecutions in multiple regions, Divisional Commander of Tesano, and District Commander of Tesano-Accra. She served as a United Nations Police Officer (UNPOL) in Liberia. In August 2025, she became the first Ghanaian and the only woman to be elected to serve on the INTERPOL Africa Committee.
