One culvert from disaster: Sazie risks total isolation as DCE begs for road repair
Pogoziema Dousaa, a middle-aged farmer, states that "When it rains, we carry the sick on our backs," due to a deep crack in the only culvert linking Sazie to the outside world. The road to Sazie was awarded for tarring over 10 years ago, but the contract was cancelled after the 2016 change of government and was never repackaged. James Wor, District Chief Executive for Daffiama-Bussie-Issa, warns that "If that culvert is broken, you will be cut off completely."
When skies open, Sazie shuts down, preventing farmers from reaching fields, traders from accessing the Tabiase market, and the sick from getting to the district capital, Issa. Cletus Samari, a 55-year-old elder, says, "Now every rainfall feels like a punishment." Mr. Wor has submitted reports to the Regional Roads Engineer, who has since visited Sazie. He is appealing to the government to repackage and construct this road immediately.
