World Cup reality check: Mexico beat fringe Black Stars 2-0 in Puebla friendly
Mexico beat a fringe Black Stars 2-0 in an international friendly on Saturday morning at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla. The game was shown live on Joy Prime. Mexico took the lead just two minutes into the match after a mistake from Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Guillermo Martínez found space in Ghana's defence and slotted past Asare to seal a win for the hosts in the 54th minute.
The Ghana side was largely made up of Ghana Premier League players and U-23 prospects. Ghana's U-20 coach Desmond Offei took charge of the Black Stars on an interim basis because newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz and assistant coach Roger de Sá were absent due to personal reasons. Brian Gutiérrez capitalized on Asare's mistake and curled home from long range. Debutants and fringe players including Dacosta Antwi and Manu Duah were handed opportunities to impress. Substitutes David Oduro and Jerry Afriyie were also introduced. The defeat extends Ghana's poor record against Mexico, with the Black Stars now losing all five meetings between the two nations.
The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a second warm-up match against Wales on June 2 before facing Jamaica on June 10, as preparations continue for their Group L opener against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
