Woman, 25, jailed 12 years over acid attack on boyfriend
Vera Asare, 25, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Friday, March 27, 2026, in the High Court in Koforidua for an acid attack that led to the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Omane. Asare pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her boyfriend, Omane, a mobile phone dealer. She was convicted for attacking Omane with acid on November 29, 2024, in Koforidua.
Prosecutors revealed that the couple's relationship had been plagued by "frequent misunderstandings and allegations of infidelity." Asare allegedly poured a gallon of a substance, later confirmed to be acid by the Ghana Standards Authority, over Omane's body while he was asleep. Omane was rushed to the Adweso Clinic, then to the Eastern Regional Hospital, and finally to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Omane succumbed to his injuries in July 2025. He left behind a three-year-old child shared with Asare. Emotional scenes marked courtroom proceedings on Monday, March 23, 2026, as relatives of the deceased reacted angrily to the judge's decision to postpone sentencing pending the outcome of the pregnancy test.
