We have to stay at the forefront and expand the frontiers of freedom - Kofi Bentil
Kofi Bentil, Senior lawyer and Vice-President of IMANI Africa, urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in protecting democratic freedoms while speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday. He stated, "For me, I am not waiting for all of our democracy to be removed from under our feet and for us to fall down before we rise up." He added, "So we always have to make sure that we are staying at the forefront and ensure that we expand the frontiers of freedom."
His comments followed the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration in Accra, where thousands of NPP members and supporters protested on Thursday. The NPP described the issues as threats to Ghana's democracy and the weakening of key state institutions under the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC). The demonstration concluded with a petition presented at Jubilee House. The NPP delegation was led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, General Secretary Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, and the Chief of Staff to NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. The party had also submitted a separate petition to the Supreme Court. Mr Bentil acknowledged arguments on both sides regarding selective justice in Ghana.
